Jose & Abran: Chopsticks, Soccer, & Making Lasting Memories

In 2022, Jose, who was 12 years old at the time, was matched with his Big Brother, Abran. Jose loves sports, especially soccer, so they formed a close bond over the summer practicing on the pitch. But they have also tried a variety of new activities together, including go carts, golf, and painting, as well as getting lunch or ice cream every now and then.

Abran describes Jose as quiet most of the time, but a curious thinker.

“Once he’s comfortable, he’s the heart of the conversation. He’s easy going and brings a positive attitude every time I see him,” said Abran.

Jose is eager to learn new things. Often, that comes in the form of learning new soccer moves from Abran. However, Abran said his most memorable moment with Jose was at a local Thai restaurant. Jose didn’t know how to use chopsticks, so Abran spent some time teaching him how to use them.

“That lunch stuck with me for a few reasons,” Abran said. “One, it reminded me that there was once a first time for me when it came to learning how to use chopsticks and you never know where anyone else is in their learning for anything. Second, it was an unexpected place for me to see Jose determined to do something.”

Jose considers learning new things one of the major benefits of having a Big. He also appreciates being able to talk to Abran about anything, and feels Abran is helping to set him on a good path in life.

“My Big has an amazing personality. He is very kind and gives a lot of good advice and has really good opinions. He is always in a good mood, and he is an adult I can 100% trust,” Jose shares.

One of Abran’s favorite things about being a Big is taking Jose to do activities that he otherwise wouldn’t have access to. He said it’s gratifying to see his Little appreciate their outings.

“Not every outing is a life-changing experience in isolation, but it’s fulfilling to know that the sustained engagement gives Littles a positive influence during their growth,” Abran said.

When Abran first considered becoming a Big, he thought about how beneficial it would have been for him to have a mentor growing up. He knew there was a need for more Latino Bigs and was eager to connect with a Little who shares a similar background.

Now, Jose is 15 and a sophomore in high school. Abran has noticed him becoming more curious and responsible in the three years they’ve known each other. Jose is more comfortable asking questions and even takes the lead in planning their outings sometimes. He’s making more responsible choices in school and prioritizing academics.

“Something I would say to someone who’s thinking of becoming a Big,” Jose said, “is it really helps guide kids and teenagers to a really good path and a bright future, and the good memories they make stay with them.”
