Charlie was only 15 when he lost his father. His mother, now a single parent, got by with the support of friends and family. Charlie found mentors and coaches who would become strong role models throughout the remainder of his teenage years.

In his adult life, Charlie has always felt a pull toward mentorship and helping children. In 2020, just as the COVID-19 pandemic was disrupting nearly every aspect of everyone’s lives, Charlie decided to officially become a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters.
“If my involvement can make a fraction of the positive impact that I felt from these mentors [growing up] and that I am sure my mother felt from them, I would consider my involvement a success,” Charlie thought.
Charlie was matched with Adriel, who had just turned 12. These two basketball enthusiasts turned out to be a perfect match! They bonded over playing, watching, and talking about their favorite sport. When they weren’t on the court, they were going out for teriyaki or pizza.
A year after the two were matched, Charlie experienced his most impactful moment yet as a Big Brother. While driving with his partner and dog, a driver ran a red light, causing an accident that totaled Charlie’s car. While flustered and cold standing on the street corner, Charlie heard a voice call his name. It was Adriel! Adriel and his mom pulled over and waited with Charlie for nearly two hours.
“To this day, I am moved beyond words at this thoughtfulness and this community I am lucky enough to have joined,” Charlie said, reflecting on the memory.

More recently, Charlie was able to repay Adriel’s kindness with an incredible surprise — courtside seats at a Portland Trail Blazers game! Charlie said his favorite memory was seeing Adriel’s face as they walked to the seats, the location of which he’d kept a secret.
“He was excited to the point of shock!” Charlie said. “He repeatedly said how happy he was and that he never in his life thought he would sit courtside for a Blazer game. To be a part of this happiness meant the world.”
Adriel is now 16. He has his first job and consistently gets As at school. Charlie said they’ve developed a great friendship, and he’s impressed with Adriel’s growth and thoughtfulness.
The two are looking forward to the future. Charlie has been giving Adriel driving lessons in his car, so that Adriel can soon take his driving test. They also plan to visit several college campuses to explore what might be next for Adriel after high school.
“I am excited to continue to watch Adriel grow and take on the world,” Charlie said.
