Stocks & Securities

You invest. A child profits. It’s that simple. By making a donation in the form of stocks, bonds, mutual funds or other appreciated securities, you are making an investment in the future of children in your community. As a donor, you are entitled to take a charitable deduction for the full fair-market value of appreciated securities held longer than one year, and you usually avoid paying the capital gains tax that would be due if you sold the securities. If your equities are currently held at a bank or in a brokerage account, simply send a letter of instruction to your broker or banker with a full description of the securities and your gift’s intended purpose. We ask that you notify Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest of your instructions so that we can ensure proper credit of your gift. Cars for Kids’ Sake

Cars For Kids’ Sake is a unique way to help children in need by simply donating your old car, or other vehicle. Simply call 800-710-9145 or click on the link below and a representative of Cars for Kids’ Sake will contact you. They will also be able to provide you with a donation receipt.

Matching Gifts

Many employers match donations to charitable organizations for their employees, retirees and family members. Employer matching gifts can double or even triple your donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest. Check with your company to see if it offers a matching gift program that will match your gift or volunteer hours as a Big Brother, Sister or Couple.   • Macy’s Mission Every One: Now through December 24, donate online or round up in-store at Macy’s to help fuel life-changing mentoring experiences.
  • Nordstrom Rack: Our longstanding partnership with Nordstrom Rack continues this holiday season! Now through December 31st, when you visit your local Nordstrom Rack or shop online, you can donate and support the Sponsor-A-Moment campaign.

Cars for Kids’ Sake

Cars For Kids’ Sake is a unique way to help children in need by simply donating your old car, or other vehicle. Step 1: Click here, then select GO. You will be asked for your vehicle’s make, model, vehicle identification number (VIN#), and current mileage. Step 2: After you enter the donation information, you will need to print out the forms at the end of the donation wizard and send them to us with your vehicle’s title to the attention of the Finance Manager, Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest, 1827 NE 44th Ave., Suite 100, Portland, OR 97213. Step 3: Your vehicle will then be sold at a dealers-only auction or to a licensed recycler. With all costs deducted, Big Brothers Big Sisters typically receives between 65 percent and 80 percent of the gross sale price. Proceeds benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters in Oregon and Southwest Washington. Step 4: Go to IRS Publication 526 for instructions on reporting your donation as a tax deduction.
