When you ask people what they notice about Ash and Mahayla’s bond, they’ll say their care, respect, and love are evident in their support of one another and deep connection. When they were first matched, Mahayla, just 8 years old at the time, had already weathered more challenges than most her age. Her mother, Jamie, saw her daughter struggling in school and falling behind. Seeking guidance and support, Jamie turned to Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest to find a role model who could provide Mahayla with the support and mentorship she needed to thrive.
Ash and Mahayla’s bond was initially sparked by a shared love for animals and art. As they spent more time together, their connection deepened into a genuine friendship that would shape both of their lives in profound ways.
Ash has not only become a trusted friend to Mahayla, but also a pillar of support for Jamie, who saw firsthand the positive impact Ash had on her daughter. “Ash has become a part of our family and an ally in my parenting,” Jamie shared. “They have touched my daughter’s heart by getting on her level and meeting her where she is at every step of the way.”

Their adventures have varied from exhilarating snow-tubing escapades on Mt. Hood to quieter moments of cookie decorating in the park during the pandemic. Ash and Mahayla have cherished every moment they have spent together. However, one of their favorite traditions, which began in 2022, is attending the Portland Pride Festival. Mahayla had requested to attend the event and had so much fun they now eagerly anticipate it each year. Ash, who is also a part of the LGBTQIA+ community, reminisced, “I hadn’t gone to the Pride Festival in years prior to 2022, but going with her has been rejuvenating and reminded me why visibility is so important, especially for youth who fall under the LGBTQIA+ rainbow.”
For Mahayla, having Ash in her life meant more than just fun outings and celebrations. It meant having someone who believed in her, who showed up consistently, and who inspired her to dream big. With Ash’s encouragement, Mahayla has gained the confidence to tackle life’s challenges head-on and to pursue her passions and ambitions with determination.
As they’ve reflected on their journey together, Ash and Mahayla knew they had something special—a friendship that had grown stronger with each passing year. They had navigated ups and downs, celebrated milestones, and created lasting memories that would stay with them forever.
