2024 Big and Little of the Year: John and James

In the world of Big Brothers Big Sisters, some matches’ bonds are built through countless outings and conversations, while others form a natural connection from their very first meeting. Big John and Little James exemplify this kind of match.

John had considered becoming a Big Brother early in his career but only took the plunge after being inspired by a speech from CEO Beach Pace to an executive group he was part of. After learning about the critical need for male mentors and the long waitlist of young boys, John was compelled to join the program.

Since John entered James’ life, he has been a pillar of stability amidst times of inconsistency and change. James has grown into a more secure individual, benefiting from John’s guidance and fresh perspective outside his family. John has also become a cherished friend, enthusiastically sharing in James’ growth and interests.

“If I could tell kids anything about my experience, it’s that it’s awesome! You can do so many fun new things. Don’t be hesitant about joining BBBS—reaching out and building a support system can be incredibly rewarding.”

John has gained insight into how James, who has autism, perceives and processes the world, finding joy in experiencing life from James’s perspective. Through this, John has assisted James in finding his own independence and voice.

James reflects on his experience, saying, “If I could tell kids anything about my experience, it’s that it’s awesome! You can do so many fun new things. Don’t be hesitant about joining BBBS—reaching out and building a support system can be incredibly rewarding.”

Their connection is a testament to the profound impact Big Brothers Big Sisters can have on not just the youth, but the adult also. As John puts it, “In James I have found a friend. Someone who I look forward to spending time with. I love his enthusiasm when he talks about the things he likes. I appreciate when he calls on me for help and support. I love my Little Brother James. He is the best Little Brother I could have asked for.”
