Erica & Yoltzin: A Match to Cheer For

When Erica was looking for a way to give back to her community, she signed up to be a mentor, or Big, with Big Brothers Big Sisters. She was matched with a Little Sister named Yoltzin, who was then 13 years old.

During their friendship, Erica and Yoltzin have experienced some of the best Portland has to offer. Their outings have included getting Starbucks, Jamba Juice, or dinner together, going to Blazers games, visiting Hopscotch, seeing The Nutcracker ballet, going to Zoo Lights, doing crafts at the local library, walking at Tualatin Hills Nature Park, and playing mini golf at Oaks Park.

However, their favorite activity was having a picnic before a movie at the park. They went to Trader Joe’s together to gather their spread before heading to the park. After eating, they played games until sunset, when the free movie played on a big projector screen. They both appreciated the time spent outdoors on a nice evening together.

One of Yoltzin’s interests is cheerleading for her school’s football team. Erica is proud to be in the stands supporting her at games and cheer competitions.

Now, almost three years since they’ve met, Erica has noticed changes in Yoltzin, who is now 16 and in high school.

“I have seen Yoltzin become more confident and unafraid to try new things like cheerleading and modeling,” Erica said. “She has become curious and thoughtful in conversation; she always reciprocates and genuinely cares to hear about the other person.”

Yoltzin has been building new life skills like planning, communication, and managing her own calendar. She strives to do her best at school, in cheerleading, and beyond, and cares deeply about her family.

This friendship benefits Erica as well. She is glad she decided to try mentoring and has found that it brings more fun and personal fulfillment into her life.
